Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the bustling capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra and serves as India’s financial, commercial, and entertainment epicenter. This vibrant metropolis, located on the west coast of India along the Konkan coast, features a deep natural harbor that has played a pivotal role in its development.

Mumbai’s history is rich and diverse. Originally an archipelago of seven islands, it was inhabited by the indigenous Koli communities. The city’s transformation began in 1534 when the Portuguese took control of the islands, later ceding them to the British as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza when she married Charles II of England. Under British rule, the islands were merged into a single landmass, and Mumbai emerged as a major port city, essential to British India’s maritime trade.

Post-independence, Mumbai continued to grow, becoming a hub of industry, finance, and culture. Today, it houses the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange (NSE), and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), making it the financial heart of India. The city’s economy thrives on a mix of industries including finance, IT, textiles, and manufacturing, alongside a bustling port trade through the Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
